Recently the law minister of Delhi, Mr. Jitendra Singh Tomar was nabbed by Delhi Police on the allegations of fake educational degree. More than two dozen cops to arrest a minister! Isn’t it ridiculous? The political circus in Delhi in the past few days has become ugly.
To be honest I had never been a fan of AAP or Arvind Kejriwal for his ways, but one thing that needs to be said from the recent development is:
“They have hit hard and at the right place.”
By saying this, in no way do I mean to say Jitendra Singh Tomar is clean or he has been falsely implicated. There is a legal procedure under progress and justice will prevail, but one thing that I personally abhor are these media trials. Media coverage of the whole issue is done in such a way that suggests Mr. Tomar has already been proven guilty. Media reports that Tomar does not remember the classrooms, name of faculty members and other related facts. Forgetting facts at times of tension is quite obvious and can be ruled out quite easily in the court as evidence. Forensic tests of the certificates and lie detection test could rather prove to be more concrete evidence.
What amuses me the most is the fact that Jitendra Singh Tomar is a practicing lawyer for a long time and was associated with Indian National Congress before joining AAP in 2014. Therefore the timing of the controversy is perfectly timed and it clearly suggests the interests of the powerful opposition are hit quite hard.
BJP on one hand demands Arvind Kejriwal to resign whereas two of their own ministers Smriti Irani and Ram Shankar Katheria face similar charges. This is the level of hypocrisy that prevails in our political system.
In 2004 election commission affidavit, Smriti Irani declared her qualification as Bachelor of Arts from Delhi University, while in 2014 general election affidavit she declared her qualification as B.Com part-1 from Delhi University.
Kateria on the other hand has allegedly forged the marks in his mark sheet. Leave alone BJP, Congress top brass Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are also alleged to have faked their educational degrees.
The opposition had put all their resources to stop Arvind Kejriwal, when he showed that with political will, it is possible to reduce the electricity and water charges and curb corruption. There are attempts to shut down the Anti-Corruption Bureau or at least blunt its spearhead, which is controlled by Kejriwal, could do permanent damage to the opposition.
One thing that will be interesting to watch is how AAP will figure out its way to come out of the political mess and deliver its promise it had made to the people of Delhi.
