Gender stereotypes have been the crushing the bones of our society since ages and even today I don’t think we can look past it. Women are still being treated as the weaker sex. Whenever it comes to doing something important or taking crucial decisions, men are being preferred over women.
Though our society claims to give same importance to both the sexes but does it actually happen?
Girls from a very tender age itself start inculcating the idea that they are somewhat inferior to guys. This doesn’t come naturally to them. It happens because of the way we treat them and the common references which we make like ‘girls can’t do this’ or ‘a boy is better than a girl’. We may not be doing it intentionally but by our actions this message does get channelized into their minds.
It’s really sad when I see girls being pushed down time and again. Why do we say ‘doing it like a girl’ in the form of an insult when we know that they can do any job as good as a guy.
Imagine what a girl must be feeling inside when that phrase is being used as a derogatory remark. It shatters their confidence and somewhere deep they also start doubting themselves, ‘Am I not good enough?’ Why is it so difficult for us to respect them for who they are? Being a girl is a matter of pride and it is, we, who have to change the way that phrase is being used from now on.
‘Doing it like a girl’ should mean doing it in the best possible way and not the other way around. Here is a lovely video which conveys this message brilliantly.
