The BJP government in Goa must get ready to face some serious criticism after they scrapped off the holiday reserved for celebrating Gandhi Jayanti. In list of official holidays released by the government on Saturday, 2nd October is not being mentioned as a national holiday.
What was more interesting was that this strange decision came on the day when the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled in the famous Parliament Square in London.
What this decision means is that Congress finally has something to say after a long time. Ever since their epic loss in the general elections, followed by the disastrous Delhi elections, they have been surprisingly very quiet in the past. Finally, now they have a reason to oppose the ruling party. And I don’t think they will leave any stone unturned till they extract the maximum out of this controversy.
Statements from Congress spokesperson have already started flying around after this incident. Durgadas Kamat, a Congress spokesperson said, “This clearly shows the hidden agenda of the BJP government. This seems like it is just the beginning. Hope the government does not have holidays on Nathuram Godse’s birth anniversary in the future.”
While on the other hand, the BJP is keeping their lips tight, not saying a word about why they did it. Congress is trying to dig up all past incidents to support their case against BJP. In a statement given by Anand Sharma, another spokesperson for Congress, he said, “They can’t do it. It is a national holiday and no state government can change it. But last year too, the Centre showed disrespect by handing out brooms.”
This sure looks like a controversy which might not end anytime soon. The BJP is being accused of communal politics, which might not be hundred percent wrong, seeing the shocking decision taken by the party. It’s still too early to pass a judgement, but one thing is for sure, Congress is in for some action after a very long time.
