Shameful! He Was Humiliated And Abused In A Bus In Delhi Just Because…

What differentiates a human from the lower hierarchy of species? Of course the first answer that comes to our mind is the sense of intellect and discrimination. But are we really making use of it? Are we really practicing it in our day to day life? Let’s take a deeper perspective of this statement.

We all have been blessed with this unimaginable and complicatedly designed HUMAN BODY. On to that we are blessed with these beautiful sense organs which connect us to the outer world. They help us in receiving a stimulus and reacting to it accordingly. Now suppose, if out of, say hundred, may be ten are devoid of any of the senses (take it to be hearing in this case), then don’t they they have the right to interact with the outer world or present their desires in front of anyone?

A justified answer to this would be “Yes”. They hold all the birth rights to fight for what they have got, to get what they deserve and to live in this judgemental society with equality and dignity. The story which is coming forth describes the life of a hearing impaired person who with his will and courage has proven that undoubtedly where there is a will, there is a way. It describes how these cruel and so called “Normal” people take the advantage of a weak one and their weaknesses. They often forget that they are a part of this nature’s cycle of giving aid to them who are in need of it rather than making fun and commenting about them in an absurd way which is unacceptable and more than that, Inhumane.

We live in the so called capital of India and call it “DELHI DILWAALON KI”. But after reading this we all would actually question this tagline we have given to the capital. An appropriate line to sum up the entire quote would be-

Delhi’s noise has a hidden deep silence waiting to be heard.

rohit sounds of silenceA 25 years old Graphic Designer, Rohit Singhvi is leading a normal life despite being a deaf and mute since birth. Let’s use the word Hearing Impaired as the term deaf and mute is now obligatory. He was born in Mumbai but is living in Delhi since last twenty years as a resident of Hari Nagar. His father is a businessman and mother is a homemaker. He graduated in commerce from Shobbit University  and his love for drawing and painting instilled the desire of being a Graphic Designer in him which he undoubtedly accomplished despite of the hardest hurdle nature has put forward for him .

He says “I love giving life to cartoons and making them real”.

It seems so kind that a person with such a disability believes in giving life to lifeless cartoons which actually have a temporary existence in our lives. Isn’t the purity and golden-hearted nature is reflected from this act?

He had worked as Graphic Designer with Batra Art Press Pvt. Ltd. for 3 years and is now looking forward to a government job. After all, desires sees no bars and has no bounds. He is an active member as well as a student of SOS (Sounds Of Silence) organisation.

Let’s take a tour of the day to day problems he faces carrying this disability with him in the contemporary world and look into his life and learn what ‘His Sounds of Silence’ wants to convey us. If one listens to his inner voice, he considers himself like every normal being and is proud of what God has made him but is it the same with all the people around him? Do they really have “HEARTS”?  We have seen and he has experienced being considered differently able from the crowd. They call him ‘Abnormal’. They treat him as a ‘defective one’. They say “What a Pity!” One of his worst experiences which actually had a traumatic impact on him both physically and mentally was in a bus.

He was travelling in a crowded bus. After covering a long distance standing, he finally got a seat. He stood up just one stop before so that his seat could be offered to someone. When he was standing in the front, some goons entered the bus and told him to go back. It was difficult for him to decode their words. He tried to make them understand that he cannot understand them. While all this was happening, the spectators were looking quietly and no one uttered a single word, rather they assumed that he is doing it intentionally. At the end, he was abused by the driver, he endured lewd comments and the ‘deaf and dumb’ so called ‘normal people’ sat quietly in the bus.

Even someone “Normal” would have felt insulted and undignified by this incident. And he was hearing impaired. What are we actually doing? Are we trying to show that we can use our advantage or power over a soul who is actually devoid of it? No, they aren’t devoid of it. Instead they have it in them far more than us but they are “HUMANS” and we are HUMAN BEINGS”. The word “Humane” has been derived from the word “human: which means To Live. Are we actually fulfilling that standard of living which god wished us to do? Do we stand up to the definition of “Being Human”?

After reading this incident a certain answer would be a “NO”!

But as it is quoted in the BIBLE

‘Hope anchors the soul’ Hebrew 6:19.

Rohit came to know about our organisation from his school teacher at Kulachi Hansraj. We tried to become his ‘hope’ of being considered as ‘normal’ and ‘equal’ like ‘a star in the dark night’.

Our motive is to reach millions of deaf students and give them elbow room to work and learn without letting their daintily come in between. They learn through Computers and Mobile phones.

Rohit has done his advanced training in computer programming and is learning something new every day. It has many tie ups with different firms that provide jobs to people like them not by sympathising with them but by seeing their talents and qualifications. They learn here and strive to be the best among the rest.

A lot can be inspired by the courage and the determination of a person who was challenged by the god.

If you genuinely feel like making a contribution, in whatever way you see fit, don’t sit back waiting for the right time. If you think it is not right to steal someone’s ‘live a normal life’ card just because they are hearing impaired, take a stand right now.

There’s never a right time except, maybe, this time.

Now it’s your turn to show the world that Humanity still exists. In fact, make it EXIST!

“DO MORE THAN JUST EXIST!”
