Infinite Shades of PINK: Changing Perceptions in Twisted Minds

Watched Pink. It was an exhilarating experience for more than one reason. It touched a nerve somewhere. Gave me goosebumps. There are plenty of movies made which talk about women empowerment, rape cases, confrontations and harassment but this was different. One of the boldest movies in this regard and one which strikes a chord with the modern generation. The urban crowd.

I say this is a bold movie because of the mindset and frankness and honesty it depicts. The narrative looks so real that it could have happened anywhere and to anyone. And I salute Amitabh Bachchan for selecting this movie and bringing out one of his best on-screen performance.

The beautiful part about Pink is that it not only talks about the problems and discrimination that women go through but also takes subtle dig about the kind of racism that some people face on a daily basis.

The ‘North-east’ girl discrimination angle was so brilliantly depicted that I couldn’t stop myself from applauding! We don’t ask someone who is from UP, Maharashtra, Delhi but the moment someone is from North East, we start giving them names and start shaming them for one or the other reason. Pink shows why is it wrong to do that!

One more reason for which Pink deserves an applause is that in one of the dialogues, Mr. Bachchan specifies that if a woman; it doesn’t matter whether she is a girlfriend, a wife, a sex worker, a friend; if a woman says NO, she means NO. This deserves special mention because it raises a voice against the Men who take advantage of a woman after marriage. Marriage doesn’t allow you to rape someone. And mind you, if you’re doing something which isn’t done by MUTUAL CONSENT (this part is very necessary), then it can be qualified as a rape.

Taapsee Pannu in one of the court trials tells the judge that given another choice, will she act the way she did earlier and she says if he does it again, she’ll hit it again! That is a very BOLD statement and Taapsee has shown her terrific acting skills in that. This girl will go places one day, that’s for sure. She already has acted in 2 powerful movies and shown that she is not here to beat around the bush but she means business and to deliver a performance like that deserves special mention!

It is ok if a girl is not a virgin. If she has had sex before. If she drinks. Strikes a conversation with a random guy. Goes out to have a dinner with him. It is all OK if it is done with her approval or by mutual consent. BUT it is NOT ok if she is FORCED to do so. Any of this. And PINK movie brings out this fact in a brilliant way.Consent is very very necessary. If there is not consent, then it just becomes a desire. A lust. An evil. And this movie brings that out really really well.

Apart from these unique things, PINK also talks about the much repeated “Social mindset” that girls shouldn’t drink, shouldn’t come late, shouldn’t wear shorts, shouldn’t go to parties, etc etc. Before asking the girls to “behave”, the society should ask the boys to respect because a girl’s shorts DO NOT define her character. The earlier this society understands this, the better!

Girls can bring medals and win laurels for the country. More power to such performances!
