I am a student of NIT Durgapur. And this is the dark side of my institute. About what happened with a student of my college due to the negligence of my college authorities.
In spite of having severe headache Prosenjit Sarkar (a student of Electrical Engineering in NIT Durgapur) had to continue with his semester end exams in NIT Durgapur, as the authorities believed these headaches to be nothing more than an excuse to skip the exams.
After 2 days of continuous headaches, eventually my senior couldn’t sit through it on 18th November, and decided to go to the Medical Unit inside the campus which is supposed to give 24 hour medical service.
He went at 2 pm and the doctor arrived at 5 pm, that too after several pleas by us. Until then he was given some normal medicines for headache and few bottles of saline.
When Dr. B.K. Sarkar finally arrived, he said there is nothing to worry about, gave him an injection, and asked us to take Prosenjit back to the hostel.
He couldn’t even stand, so on insisting they kept him under observation till 8 pm, but then made him leave.
Prosenjit barely managed to return to the hostel with our support. 15 minutes later he was found lying on the floor of the corridor unconscious.
Not knowing what to do, the ambulance was called from the medical unit which is supposed to be there for the students 24 hours.
After waiting 40 minutes, we decided to take him in an auto to the Medical Unit. Then came the height of negligence when the doctor said his pulse is low and referred him to the Mission Hospital, which is another 20 minute ride from our college.
His pulse wasn’t low, he was dead.
We were shocked when we came to know this in the Mission Hospital around 11 pm.
Our extremely humble Prosenjit died due to the extreme negligence of college authorities. Coming from a poor background, he lost his mother when he was a kid, his father is a cart puller and he has two sisters to take care of.
All hopes and responsibilities were pinned on him, who will do it?
Our director has refused to speak to us till now. No responsibility has been taken by our college. Is this how cheap the life of a student is?
It is not the first time when something this big has happened and our director has kept his mouth shut.
He is not capable enough to answer us even in extreme situations like these. He has to resign.
Not just that, the medical facilities has to be improved immediately. The next one can be me.
Are we going to be ignored because we are not in a big city like Delhi or Mumbai? We need support from everyone. This cannot go unnoticed. Not anymore. We have to raise our voices together and take a stand. It’s a matter of life and death. And it counts.
