Hello all. Here is another chilling case of the atrocities perpetrated by police on helpless women.
Blatant misuse of the police’s power depicted in this recent incident is enough to break anyone’s faith in Delhi Police. The incident took place in New Delhi’s Rohini area where two women were allegedly beaten up by a sub-inspector inside a police station of that area. The level of violence that the sub-inspector did on two women was awful. He probably forgot that his department is for “Shanti Sewa Nyaya.”
The women, in their complaint, alleged that the sub-inspector thrashed them, forcing them to confess in a case of robbery. The women were forced to remove their salwars and were beaten with rods. What an example of dysfunction, abuse and impunity this incident is!
Reacting to this case, the Aam Aadmi Party leader, Rakhi Birla, said that she will speak to Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal regarding this case. The two women were taken to Ambedkar Hospital for treatment where a large number of locals created ruckus over the alleged custodial brutality. (Source) Following the incident, four police officers, including the sub-inspector have been suspended. It is a good move, but it is not sufficient because one has to think about the hideousness and the absurdity that lies behind this tragedy. It is a human rights issue. We have seen police officers hurling abuses on the general public, and often humiliating and harassing public. This is police lawlessness; will this ever come to an end?
This case reminds me of a case on February 9, 2014, when a 23 year old gay man was brutally raped by two policemen in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The victim protested and tried to get away, but the police beat him with sticks and then forced themselves on him, sexually abusing him while shouting ‘jab poori duniya se marwai hai, toh humse bhi marwa le’ (‘when you have got fu**ed by the whole world, then get fucked by us too’). The man returned home battered and bruised with multiple wounds on his body. The police were not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and were in full control of their senses. That incident highlights the daily insecurities faced by the LGBT community in India who are frequently harassed by the authorities. (Source)
I fear having to deal with the police, as I cannot depend on them to protect the entire population of India. Can you? Unless things change, Indian police will continue with a tainted reputation and garner great distrust from the people of India—the very people they have to protect.
