Yet another day full of usual fracas and commotion with the parliamentarians quibbling for no reason – they boast of the long quality political experience they have got every time a journalist tries to question their motives behind the brouhaha they trigger in the Parliament. And then subtly evade the question by saying, “This is politics, you won’t understand it. Come to the parliament someday and then you will know.” They probably think that people like us are hicks and have no idea about the “drama” that happens on the floor of the majestic building. Since most of us know about the level of politics that is practised here in India therefore there is no point elaborating on the matter.
But few days back something unusual happened. With the lawmakers from the opposition holding high the placards demanding resignations of External Affairs Minister and the Madhya Pradesh CM, we saw similar placards being held up and high by the lawmakers belonging to the ruling side. It basically turned into a “war of placards” and the slogans were pretty comical too. One of the placards from opposition said “Bada Modi mehrbaan to chotta modi pehlewan” and another one from the ruling side which brought a smile but full of disgust to my face had the slogan, “ulta chor kotwal ko daante, gareebo ki zameen damaad ko aate”.
We might find all this hilarious in one way but if we give this entire episode a serious thought then it won’t take much effort to realize how shamelessly they stooped to the “lowest level of politics”. They were acting like lemmings who had no reason to justify their demeanour. But then to pin our hopes on this disgusting class of parochial people might just be a foolish thing to do.
Now coming to the moot point, how many of us know that 23rd July was the birthday of legendary freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad. To be frank even I didn’t know until I saw a post on Facebook adulating the martyr on his birthday. And believe me that was the only post I saw apart from the one shared by Ajay Maken, paying tribute to Azad with a photo of Bhagat Singh.
This shouldn’t have happened as this goof up sent a wrong message but for once this faux pas can be ignored as he was quick in expurgating the post. Now, if we ruminate on the entire matter then it is dispiriting to see that no one remembered the birthday of the freedom fighter. It won’t be wrong to infer that we are slowly forgetting the inordinate contribution of the thousands and lakhs of freedom fighters who fought with self-abnegation for the generations to come so that we don’t face the tyranny of the ruthless British Empire.
They fought for you and me and the entire existing population. They fabricated the dream of a spirited, energetic, and passionate India that will conquer the world one day but are we steering on those lines.Today we have these shysters who put self-interests over national interests, who won’t hesitate in brown nosing to make their political bosses happy and eventually earn the brownie points. This is similar to what some Indians used to do during the days of freedom struggle. They cohered with the British officials to suppress the revolutionary movement and they did it for their own personal benefits. The scenario today is in no way different except that today bosses too are Indians. Now this is one point, another point that requires to be expounded is the role played by media. I understand that the media houses are required to show the proceedings of the Parliament, but it is wrong that they cast spotlight on the stupid activities of such intransigent “lawmakers” and have no time to even play a documentary on a legend of the stature of Chandra Shekhar Azad.
Is this what we want the young kids to see? Shouldn’t they know about the sacrifices made by martyrs or is it more important for them to know about the stupid acts of the people sitting in the parliament who believe that the easiest way to get your demands fulfil is to stall the proceedings and stage a walkout. Then there was another news channel that was busy deprecating them for not maintaining the dignity of the Parliament. If we are going to vote hooligans to power and make them our representatives then they will act and talk waywardly just like hooligans only.
Now that we have no choice other than to put up with such acts for the next four years, but it hurts to see that they are making fun of themselves by indulging in such activities. We have time to discuss the dull witted acts of the parliamentarians but no time to remember the martyrs. One thing I am sure about is that this is not what the freedom struggle legends must have dreamt of, this is definitely contrary to their dreams. We are throttling their dreams.
