6 reasons why I hate doing engineering in India (And 1 reason why I love it)

After Bollywood and cricket, if there is anything which has such a massive craze in India, then it has to be engineering. Irrespective of the fact that students love it or hate it, India produces more than 10 lakh engineers every year. This number is far greater in India when compared to other countries. And it is one of the most important reasons why the quality of engineering is still intact in some other countries and not in India.

If given a chance to pursue this course in some other country like Germany or USA, I don’t think many would refuse. Doing engineering from India has many drawbacks when compared to other countries. Here are those 6 reasons why you might not like getting an engineering degree from India.

#1 The constant pressure of society – Everyone in your family and your neighbourhood will have an active interest in you for the entire period for 4 years, and not in a positive way at all. Right the from the time you are about to select a college up to the time you get graduated, there will always be thousands of questions fired at you related to your studies and your future plans which makes a student irritated and frustrated.

#2 You get an IT job, irrespective of your branch – Whether you studied Mechanical engineering or electrical engineering, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter much. On more occasions than not, you do end up in TCS or Wipro, doing a job completely different than what you were trained for.

#3 The system is inclined on mugging up theories rather than practicing new ideas – It’s all about lab records and assignments in India, which takes no creativity at all. Even the projects which students have to do are completely repetitive, they don’t get to learn much through them. Theory wise, an Indian student can have a good concept but if practicality is taken into account then they still lag by a huge margin.

#4 Engineers in India are more common than a common man – The huge number of students passing out of engineering colleges every year has certainly decreased the value of it. It’s become a saying in India that if you don’t do anything then you must be an engineer. It has become too mainstreamed for people to understand that there much more to this course than a degree.

#5 The exam patterns are not up to the mark at all – The numerous exams which a student has to sit for in his/her 4 years of engineering are only designed to test how much you can memorize things, and not how much you actually know. This is why the pattern of learning adopted by the students also focuses on just getting marks without actually getting bothered how they get it.

#6 There is no focus on creating jobs, it’s always about getting a job – While in other countries a lot of emphasis is being put on creating something new and original, India relies more on working out on the tried and tested formulas. Students are never encouraged for entrepreneurship. They are trained to get a dead end job in an IT company.

After all those 6 reasons why you might not like doing engineering in India, there is one reason why you should be glad that you are doing it from India and not any other country, and that is –

#1 It teaches you a lot about life – The last minute assignments, pressure cooker situation before the examinations, living up to the expectations of parents, care free night outs, playing video games till 5 in the morning and then going to class at 8, getting screwed by the professors and still managing to crack a joke about it and most importantly, learning the true meaning of jugaad. All these elements make you complete as a person and learn how to face all kinds of situations, no matter how good or bad they are.
